Once common throughout the UK, red squirrels have disappeared from many areas of England and Wales and are threatened in Scotland and Northern Ireland. In Wales only three main populations remain - on Anglesey, in Clocaenog forest in north Wales, and the largest remaining Welsh population, which is in the Tywi Forest in mid Wales. Although Red Squirrels can and will use any woodland habitat, in Britain they are now largely confined to coniferous forests where there is less competition from Grey Squirrels.
